Mitracarpus maxwelliae is a species of flowering plant in the Rubiaceae family, known as Maxwell's girdlepod. It is endemic to Puerto Rico and was first described in 1925 by Britton and P.Wilson. The species is restricted to the Guánica Commonwealth Forest, where it is found in a coastal scrub and dwarf forest habitat characterized by limestone gravel substrates.
Description
Mitracarpus maxwelliae occurs in a limited area within the Guánica Commonwealth Forest in Guánica, Puerto Rico. It grows in a coastal scrub and dwarf forest environment with limestone gravel substrates. The surrounding vegetation includes Bucida buceras, Bursera simaruba, Exostema caribaeum, Coccoloba microstachya, Plumeria alba, and Pilosocereus armatus. Due to its restricted range, the species is considered rare.
