Martiodendron fluminense is a tree species in the Fabaceae family, native to the Southeast region of Brazil. It typically reaches heights of 18–25 m, with some individuals up to 32 m tall. The species blooms from January to May and fruits from March to October. It is distinguished by its smaller inflorescences, elliptical fruits, and pubescent gynoecium. The species name refers to its origin in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Description
Martiodendron fluminense is a medium-sized tree with a height range of 8–32 m and a trunk diameter up to 93 cm. It may have buttresses up to 1 m tall. The leaves have 6–9 leaflets, with the terminal ones measuring 5–12 cm long and 1.5–5 cm wide, ovate to elliptical in shape. The inflorescences, 4.2–10 cm long, are axillary or terminal and branch directly into cymes. The fruits are oblong, 7–15 cm long, red to vinaceous, and have wings 0.8–1.3 cm wide. The species is distinguished from others in the genus by its inflorescence structure, fruit shape, and pubescent carpel. It is taller than M. excelsum and M. mediterraneum but shorter than M. elatum and M. parviflorum. The wood is similar to other species in the genus and may be used locally for construction and furniture.
