It is native to regions including CO, BT, SG, Flanders, Azores, Bulgaria, Finland, Vermont-US, and CA. The species was published in 1800. There is ongoing discussion about potential conservation due to possible misidentification of original material.

Description

Persicaria hydropiper is a plant species in the Polygonaceae family, widely distributed in Australia, New Zealand, temperate Asia, Europe, and North America. It thrives in damp environments and shallow water. Cultivated varieties are consumed in East Asia for their pungent flavor. Taxonomic clarification by Ekman & Knutsson identified a lectotype to preserve the name's traditional application. Earlier confusion regarding original material, particularly with Persicaria minor, has been noted, and if confirmed, P. hydropiper may be considered for conservation. The species is also known by common names such as water pepper, marshpepper knotweed, and tade.
