Pinus serotina, commonly known as Marsh Pine, is a pine species native to the southeastern Atlantic coastal plain of the United States, ranging from southern New Jersey to Florida and west to southern Alabama. It is also known by other names including pond pine, black bark pine, bay pine, and pocosin pine. Its distribution is beginning to extend westward into Mississippi and Tennessee.
Description
Pinus serotina belongs to the genus Pinus in the family Pinaceae. It is found in the following regions: Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and globally. The species was first described in 1803 by Michx. This pine is adapted to wetland and coastal environments, often growing in marshy or poorly drained soils.
