Marsh Cress
Rorippa islandica (Oeder) Borbás

Rorippa islandica (Oeder) Borbás, commonly known as Marsh Cress, is a species in the Brassicaceae family. It is distributed across regions including Greenland, Iceland, North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. The taxon was published in 1900. Nomenclatural discussions highlight the illegitimacy of the name due to its status as a later homonym of S. pyrenaicum Loefl. (1758). Lopez Gonzolez (1994) references 836.4 (LINN) as the lectotype, following Ball (1962), and includes a figure from Morison. However, Ball did not designate a type, noting the name's illegitimacy.
Description
Rorippa islandica (Oeder) Borbás is a member of the Brassicaceae family, known as Marsh Cress in English. It occurs in diverse regions such as Greenland, Iceland, North America, and parts of Europe and Asia. The species was formally published in 1900. Taxonomic discussions reveal that the name is considered illegitimate due to its homonymy with S. pyrenaicum Loefl. (1758). Lopez Gonzolez (1994) proposed 836.4 (LINN) as the lectotype, following Ball's (1962) analysis. Ball examined the identity of the specimen and the Allioni figure, likely referring to Rorippa pyrenaica (All.) Rchb., but did not designate a type, concluding that the name's illegitimacy does not lead to significant nomenclatural issues.
