Acer rubrum, known as red maple, is a widespread deciduous tree native to eastern and central North America. It is recognized as the most abundant native tree in the region by the U.S. Forest Service. The species occurs from southeastern Manitoba to Newfoundland and as far south as Florida and East Texas. It is characterized by its variable leaf forms, red flowers, twigs, and seeds, and is best known for its vibrant red autumn foliage. It can grow up to 30 m tall.

Description

Acer rubrum belongs to the family Sapindaceae and is widely distributed across eastern North America, including regions such as Vermont, Alabama, and Florida, as well as parts of Europe and globally. It is commonly called red maple, swamp maple, water maple, or soft maple. Its features, including red petioles and twigs, are notable, and it is especially recognized for its brilliant red fall coloration. The species was first published in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus.
