Balanites maughamii, a member of the Zygophyllaceae family, is a tree native to southern and eastern Africa. It is commonly known as manduro and is found in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Caprivi Strip, Eswatini, and parts of South Africa. The tree can grow up to 20 to 25 meters tall, with a rounded, spreading crown and a fluted trunk up to 1.3 meters in diameter. It is typically deciduous or semi-deciduous and may occasionally grow as a low shrub 1.5 to 2 meters tall.
Description
Balanites maughamii was first described by Sprague in 1913. It is distributed across several countries in southern and eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Caprivi Strip, Eswatini, and the Northern Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This species is characterized by its tall, fluted trunk and broad, spreading crown. It can reach heights of 20 to 25 meters and is typically deciduous or semi-deciduous. In some cases, it may grow as a low shrub, reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in height.
