Malus spontanea, known as nokaidō, is a crabapple species in the Rosaceae family. It is native to the Ebino-kōgen high plateau in the Kirishima volcanic complex on Kyushu, Japan. This species is closely related to Malus halliana, which is found in the wild in China. The wild population of Malus spontanea is critically low, with fewer than 300 individuals remaining.
Description
Malus spontanea (Makino) Makino is a member of the Rosaceae family and is endemic to the Ebino-kōgen high plateau in the Kirishima volcanic complex, Kyushu, Japan. It is closely related to Malus halliana, a species native to China, and some suggest it may have originally been native to Japan. The species is considered highly endangered, with a wild population of fewer than 300 individuals. It was first described in 1914.
