Malesherbia paniculata is a perennial subshrub native to central and northern Chile, found in the Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana, and O'Higgins regions. It grows from sea level up to elevations of 2600 meters. The species was first described in 1827 by D. Don.
