Didymochlaena truncatula, known as the mahogany fern, is a species in the genus Didymochlaena, the sole representative of the family Didymochlaenaceae. It is also sometimes classified within the subfamily Didymochlaenoideae of the broader Polypodiaceae family. The species was first described in 1841 and is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions.

Description

Didymochlaena truncatula is a fern species native to multiple regions, including Brazil, Colombia, and parts of Africa and Southeast Asia. It is found in various national parks and natural reserves, such as Parque Nacional Natural Las Orquídeas and Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá. The species is part of the Didymochlaenaceae family, which is recognized as a distinct family in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016. Alternatively, it may be included in the Polypodiaceae family under a broad definition as the subfamily Didymochlaenoideae. The genus Didymochlaena is characterized by its unique morphological features and ecological adaptations to diverse habitats.
