Euphorbia helioscopia is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family and is commonly referred to as madwoman's milk. This herbaceous annual is native to Europe, northern Africa, and extends eastward through much of Asia. It was first described in 1753 and is found in regions such as Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, and other parts of North America, as well as in the Azores, Madeira, and other islands.
