Lycium schweinfurthii was first described by Dammer in 1912. It belongs to the genus Lycium and is found in several countries around the southern Mediterranean. Its distribution includes Algeria, Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Egypt, Greece, Kriti, Libya, Palestine, Sicilia, and Tunisia.
