Luehea paniculata
Luehea paniculata Mart.

Luehea paniculata is a species in the Malvaceae family, first published in 1826 by Martius. The species is distributed across several regions in South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, and Suriname. Typification of the name was clarified through the examination of Martius's original collections, with a second-step lectotype designated as M 0210164. This specimen is the best-preserved and aligns with the protologue description. The name is now confirmed as an accepted species.
Description
Luehea paniculata, described by Martius in 1826, is a member of the Malvaceae family. The original protologue did not specify the specimens used, but collections by Martius are housed in the Munich herbarium (M) and the Herbarium Zuccarini. Typification efforts revealed multiple specimens in M and other herbaria, but only those without collection numbers (s. n.) were considered original material due to the lack of collection numbers in the protologue. Following ICN rules, the specimen M 0210164 was designated as a second-step lectotype. The specimen M 0210162 is a reproduction of a figure from Martius's work and not a type. The name L. paniculata is now confirmed as valid and accepted as a species, as proposed by Cunha (1985).
