The species was formally described in 1985. In the context of nomenclatural discussions, it has been noted that due to the absence of original material, Lack's treatment of the post-1753 specimen 120.27 (LINN) is accepted as a neotypification under Article 9.8 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants.
