In Chinese, it is referred to as zǐcǎo (紫草), in Korean as jichi (지치), and in Japanese as murasaki. The species is native to a range of regions including Vermont in the United States, parts of Russia, and various regions in China, Japan, Korea, and Manchuria. It was formally described in 1846 by Siebold and Zuccarini.
