Description

Limeum africanum is a member of the Limeaceae family and is endemic to Southern Africa. It is known from Botswana, the Cape Provinces, and the Northern Provinces. The species was originally described by Linnaeus in 1759. Typus speciei was noted by Friedrich to be in Burman's collection, but the LINN specimens annotated by Linnaeus filius were later additions and not original material. Jeffrey designated a specimen from Burman's herbarium (G) as a neotype. The plant is locally known as common lizardfoot or koggelmandervoet, an Afrikaans term meaning 'lizard's foot,' likely due to the shape of its leaves or inflorescence.
