Clethra arborea, known as the Lily-of-the-valley Tree, is a flowering plant in the Clethraceae family. It is native to Macaronesia, specifically Madeira, and was once present in the Canary Islands but is now extinct there. It is considered an introduced species in the Azores. The plant's natural habitat in Madeira is the laurisilva forest.

Description

Clethra arborea was first described in 1789 by Aiton. It is found in regions including Açores, Madeira, São Miguel Island, Madeira Island, Ireland, Portugal, the Azores, India, and Great Britain. While it is native to Madeira, it is extinct in the Canary Islands and has been introduced to the Azores. The species is part of the Clethra genus and is distinguished by its presence in the laurisilva forests of Madeira.
