Leontodon hirtus L. is a perennial plant in the Asteraceae family, native to regions in Europe and parts of South America. It was first described in 1759. The plant features stems with short, rigid hairs, pinnatisect leaves with narrow lobes, and solitary yellow flower heads. The achenes are brown, transversely textured, and topped with a pappus of plumose hairs. It has a chromosome count of 2n = 8.

Description

Leontodon hirtus L. is characterized by its oblique or vertical, truncate stock, with 1 to several stems measuring 10–30 cm in height. Stems are hairy with simple or 2- to 4-fid hairs. Leaves are 15–70 mm long and 3–12 mm wide, pinnatisect with narrow lateral lobes and a small terminal lobe, and covered with long, rigid hairs. The solitary capitulum has a 9–15 mm involucre with linear-lanceolate bracts. Ligules are pale yellow and uniform in color. Achenes are 5–8 mm long, brown, and transversely textured, with a pappus of two rows of plumose hairs or the outer row scabrid. It is found in Italy, Spain, France, and various regions in Chile including Valparaíso, O'Higgins, Maule, Biobío, Araucanía, Los Lagos, and Los Ríos.
