Lecythis ampla is a woody plant species in the Lecythidaceae family, native to Central and South America. It is found in regions including Puerto Parra, Antioquia, Bolívar, Boyacá, Chocó, Santander, and other locations across Colombia, as well as in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Panama. The species was first described in 1874 by Miers.
Description
Lecythis ampla is a member of the Lecythidaceae family, which also includes the Brazil nut. It is distributed across several South American countries and parts of Central America. In Costa Rica, it has been classified as an endangered species. Common names for this plant include coco, olla de mono, jicaro, and salero. The species is part of the genus Lecythis and is characterized by its ecological and regional significance in its native habitats.
