Langsdorffia hypogaea is a parasitic plant in the Balanophoraceae family, native to southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. It parasitizes Quercus spp. and other hosts, forming a pseudotuber that can reach up to 1 m2 in size. Flower clusters emerge from the soil above these tubers.

Description

Langsdorffia hypogaea, described by Mart., is a member of the Balanophoraceae family. It is a parasitic plant found in regions including Antioquia, Boyacá, Caquetá, Cauca, Chocó, Cundinamarca, Huila, Meta, Nariño, Putumayo, and Valle in Colombia, as well as in Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. This species forms a pseudotuber composed of a mixture of host and its own tissue, which can grow up to 1 m2 in size. The plant produces flower clusters that emerge from the soil above these pseudotubers.
