It is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos, Malaya, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as parts of the Caribbean such as Trinidad-Tobago. The species was first described in 1820 by Jack. It belongs to the genus Lagerstroemia and is commonly referred to as Thai crape myrtle and kedah bungor.
