It is distributed across several regions such as Labrador, Québec, Flanders, Vermont, and parts of Europe including the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Denmark. This moss is part of the genus Ptilium and was formally described in 1867. It belongs to the order Hypnales within the class Bryopsida.
