Japanese crabapple

Malus toringo is a member of the Rosaceae family and is native to several regions in Asia and North America. It is a small tree or shrub, typically reaching 4–8 m in height. The plant has elliptic to ovate leaves with a crenate to serrulate margin and a petiole of about 2.3 cm. The inflorescence is umbellate with 4–8 pink, obovate flowers. The pome is small, subglobose or oblate, and ranges in color from yellow to red. The species is found in mixed forests or shrubs in plains or valleys, at elevations of 600–1700 m. It flowers from April to May and fruits from August to September. Chromosome numbers for this species are 2n = 34, 51, 68, and 85.
