Prunus serrulata, known as Japanese Cherry, is a species of cherry tree native to Japan, China, Korea, and Vietnam. It is also associated with a cultivar derived from Prunus speciosa, a tree endemic to Japan. The Japanese have historically cultivated numerous cherry tree varieties through selective breeding, often involving crosses between wild species. These cultivars, particularly those from the Oshima cherry, are collectively referred to as the Cerasus Sato-zakura Group and are widely grown for ornamental purposes globally.

Description

Prunus serrulata belongs to the genus Prunus in the family Rosaceae. It is found in several regions, including parts of Europe, North America, and Oceania. The species was first described in 1830 by Lindl. Japanese cultivars of this species are renowned for their ornamental value and are widely planted for their showy spring blossoms. These cultivars are the result of complex hybridization and have been selectively bred for specific floral and growth characteristics.
