It was first described in 1753 and is widely distributed across the globe, including the conterminous 48 United States and various Caribbean and South American regions such as Aruba, Bahamas, Cuba, and Venezuela.

Corchorus hirsutus is a member of the genus Corchorus and belongs to the Malvaceae family. It is native to a broad range of regions, including the conterminous 48 United States, as well as the Caribbean islands and parts of South America. Its common name, Jackswitch, is used in English. The species was first published in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus.
