Ixia curta is a perennial flowering plant in the Iridaceae family, endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa. It is found in the fynbos and renosterveld habitats, ranging from Darling to Malmesbury. The species has experienced a 60% habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, and now only seven to nine fragmented subpopulations remain. These populations are threatened by invasive species, poor fire management, and the negative effects of insecticides and fertilizers on pollinators.

Description

Ixia curta, described by Andrews in 1809, is a geophyte in the Iridaceae family. Native to the Cape Provinces, it is restricted to the Western Cape. Habitat degradation from crop cultivation has severely reduced its range, leading to isolated subpopulations. Invasive species and improper fire regimes further threaten its survival. The use of insecticides and fertilizers in surrounding agricultural areas also disrupts pollinator populations, indirectly benefiting invasive species at the expense of Ixia curta.
