It is native to the Mediterranean region and has become naturalized in the United States. The species was first described by L. in 1753. It has a wide distribution across Europe and parts of Asia. Historically, it was considered the generitype of Echium by Britton & Brown, but under the Vienna Code, this has been replaced by Hitchcock's selection of E. vulgare L.
