Clausena anisata is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Rutaceae family, native to Sub-Saharan Africa, tropical and South-East Asia, India, and Sri Lanka. It is cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia. It grows in savanna, thickets, riverine forest, disturbed areas, and secondary forest, up to 3000 m altitude, in higher-rainfall regions. It is absent from drier areas. The plant is known for its medicinal properties and is found in SC, Mare Aux Cochons, and Morne Seychellois National Park.

Description

Clausena anisata is a member of the Rutaceae (citrus) family and is widely distributed across Sub-Saharan Africa, tropical and South-East Asia, India, and Sri Lanka. It is cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia. The species is absent from drier regions and thrives in higher-rainfall environments such as savanna, thickets, riverine forest, disturbed areas, and secondary forest, up to an altitude of 3000 m. The plant is known for its medicinal uses, contributing to its global distribution in suitable climates. Its common name, horsewood, or the Afrikaans name perdepis, refers to the foetid scent of its leaves when bruised, resembling horse urine.
