Hornschuchia bryotrophe is a species in the Annonaceae family, native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is a shrub or small tree reaching 0.5–5 m in height, with leaves 5.6–35 cm long and 1.9–9.5 cm wide. It produces flagelliflorous inflorescences with 6–22 flowers, bearing white or occasionally pinkish petals. The species flowers year-round and fruits from December to July. It is cauliflorous, with inflorescences emerging from the trunk or branches. The type specimen was collected in Bahia in 1816 and is housed at the BR herbarium.

Description

Hornschuchia bryotrophe (Nees) is a member of the Annonaceae family, found in the northeastern and southeastern regions of Brazil. The species is characterized by its chartaceous leaves, which are narrowly oblong to elliptic, with an asymmetric base and acuminate to acute apex. The inflorescences are flagelliflorous, with 12–60 cm long axes running near the soil, and persistent bracts 5.5–9 mm long. Flowers have a pedicel 1–40 mm long, with a conical to ellipsoid bud covered in trichomes. Sepals are completely connate, forming a cupuliform calyx, while petals are linear and white or pinkish. The fruit is a monocarp, 1.3–7 cm long, with 2–6 oblong-ellipsoid seeds. The species exhibits cauliflory, with inflorescences developing from the trunk or branches. The type locality is along the Strasse des Capitains Filisberto in Bahia.
