Malus honanensis is a species in the genus Malus, family Rosaceae, native to China. It is a small tree or shrub, 5–7 m tall, with oval to elliptical leaves and white flowers. The species is used as rootstock for domestic apples. It flowers in May and fruits mature from August to September. The pome is small, subglobose, and yellow to red with white spots. The plant grows in forested slopes and valleys at elevations of 800–1000 m.

Description

Malus honanensis, described by Rehder in 1920, is a small tree or shrub reaching 5–7 m in height. Its branches are terete and pubescent when young. Leaves are petiolate, with a petiole of about 1.9 cm, and a blade of approximately 6.4 × 4.6 cm, usually oval, sometimes elliptical, with a rounded, truncate, or cordate base and an acute or obtuse apex. The inflorescence is corymbose, bearing 5–10 white, obovate flowers. The pome is about 0.8 cm in diameter, subglobose, yellow to red with white fruit spots. Chromosome number is 2n = 34. It is found in China, particularly in the North-Central and Southeast regions, growing in terrestrial, seasonally green habitats in forested slopes and valleys.
