Hog's Fennel
Peucedanum officinale L.

Peucedanum officinale L., commonly known as Hog's Fennel, is a species in the Apiaceae family. It was first published in 1753. The plant is native to several regions in Europe and parts of Asia, including Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey, among others. Taxonomic clarification has occurred over time, with Reduron & Jarvis designating a lectotype from Herb. Clifford, though this was preceded by Frey's designation of a type specimen in LINN. An epitype was later designated by Reduron & Jacquemoud to ensure precise application of the name.
Description
Peucedanum officinale L. is a member of the carrot or parsley family (Apiaceae). It is found in a wide range of countries across Europe and the surrounding regions. The taxonomic history of the species includes multiple designations for the type specimen. Initially, Frey designated a sterile specimen in LINN as the type. Later, Reduron & Jarvis selected a different specimen from Herb. Clifford as the lectotype. To resolve any ambiguity, an epitype was also designated by Reduron & Jacquemoud to ensure the accurate application of the scientific name. This clarification helps in the consistent identification and classification of the species.
