It is endemic to the Neblina Massif region in Venezuela, where it thrives in marsh habitats at high elevations ranging from 1750 to 2200 meters above sea level. The species was formally described in 2011 by S. McPherson, A. Fleischmann, Wistuba, and Nerz, based on earlier work by Maguire.
