Lophosoria quadripinnata (J.F.Gmel.) C.Chr. is a fern species in the family Dicksoniaceae, found in the Americas from Cuba and Mexico to Chile. It is known by common names such as 'diamondleaf fern' in English and 'helecho marco' in Spanish. The plant is medium-sized, with large, multiple pinnate fronds and features resembling tree ferns, such as pneumathodes and radial rhizome symmetry. It is identified by the position and characteristics of spores on fertile fronds. Fossil evidence indicates the genus existed in the Cretaceous Period in southern Gondwana.

Description

Lophosoria quadripinnata is native to regions including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and others. In Chile, it is found between Talca and Aysén, and on the Juan Fernández Islands. In Argentina, it grows in humid valleys of western Neuquén and Río Negro. The species is related to tree ferns due to shared ancestral traits. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant. The genus Lophosoria is documented in the fossil record from the Cretaceous in Antarctica. The plant's rhizome lacks a trunk but exhibits features typical of tree ferns, including radial symmetry and hairy rhizomes and petioles.
