Chylismia cardiophylla, known as heartleaf suncup, is a species of evening primrose in the Onagraceae family. It is native to the deserts of northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona, California, and the Mexico Northwest region. This plant typically grows in sandy and rocky desert scrub habitats. It can be an annual or perennial herb, reaching up to one meter in height. The plant may have a single erect stem or a low, bushy form.

Description

The leaves of Chylismia cardiophylla are up to 5 centimeters long, with an oval or heart-shaped form and rippling or dully toothed edges. The inflorescence is a dense cluster of nodding, cup-shaped flowers on stout pedicels. The yellow or cream-colored flowers have petals measuring 3 to 12 millimeters in length and typically remain closed during the day. The plant produces a capsule-shaped fruit that is 2 to 5 centimeters long. First described in 1896, this species is adapted to arid environments and is a notable member of the evening primrose family in desert ecosystems.
