Heart-Leaved Twayblade

Neottia cordata, known as Heart-Leaved Twayblade, is a species in the Orchidaceae family. It is found in regions including Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, and various Canadian provinces, as well as parts of the United States. This orchid was previously classified in the genus Listera, but has been reclassified based on molecular phylogenetic research that revealed its close relationship with Neottia nidus-avis, the bird's-nest orchid.
Description
Neottia cordata is a member of the Orchidaceae family and is commonly found in upland bogs and mires. It is native to North America, with a distribution that includes Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, and several Canadian provinces. The species was originally placed in the genus Listera but was later moved to Neottia following molecular phylogenetic studies. These studies demonstrated that Neottia cordata shares a common evolutionary lineage with Neottia nidus-avis, the bird's-nest orchid. The species was first described in 1817 and is known by the common name Heart-Leaved Twayblade.
