Handsome Woollywort

Trichocolea tomentella is a liverwort species with a wide distribution in temperate Northern Hemisphere regions, including Labrador, Québec, and several Atlantic islands. It is distinguished by its pale green to yellowish-white, loosely formed mats and highly divided, feathery leaves. The plant typically inhabits moist, shaded environments, especially near springs and streams in both deciduous and coniferous forests. It reproduces both sexually and vegetatively, with vegetative reproduction being more common. T. tomentella exhibits morphological variation across populations but maintains consistent cell structure. It is capable of forming extensive pure patches and competes effectively with other bryophytes in suitable habitats. However, it is vulnerable to habitat loss due to logging and the drainage of moist forest areas.
