Ranunculus sardous, known as hairy buttercup, is a species in the family Ranunculaceae. It thrives in disturbed habitats, especially moist areas, and is commonly found as a roadside and lawn weed. The plant is an annual or biennial herb with an erect, hairy stem up to 50 cm tall. The leaves are typically divided into three leaflets and are hairy. The flowers have five yellow petals up to 1 cm long and five reflexed sepals. The fruit is an achene arranged in a spherical cluster of up to 35.
Description
Ranunculus sardous was published in 1763 by Crantz. It is known to be a nomen novum for R. parviflorus Gouan, as noted in botanical discussions. The species is widely distributed across Europe and has spread to other regions, including British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario, the Azores, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Ireland, Mexico, Flanders, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of China and Australia. The plant is characterized by its hairy stem and leaves, and its flowers typically have five yellow petals. It reproduces via achenes grouped in spherical clusters.
