Haemanthus albiflos, a flowering plant in the Amaryllidaceae family, is native to South Africa's coast and mountains. Known as paintbrush, it is distinct from other plants with the same name. This evergreen bulbous perennial is valued for its unique appearance and resilience to neglect. It is the only Haemanthus species found in both winter and summer rainfall regions, occurring mainly along the southern and eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coasts, favoring cool, shaded habitats.

Description

Haemanthus albiflos, described by Jacq. in 1797, is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family. It is native to the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The plant is an evergreen bulbous perennial geophyte, noted for its ability to thrive in conditions of low care. It is the only species in the Haemanthus genus that grows in both winter and summer rainfall areas. Its distribution is primarily coastal, ranging from the southern Cape through the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal, where it prefers cool, shady locations.
