Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is a cactus species native to South America. It is known for its chlorophyll-lacking mutants, which display red, orange, or yellow pigmentation. These mutants are often grafted onto Hylocereus cacti to produce the 'Moon Cactus', a popular houseplant known by several common names including Ruby Ball and Red Cap.
Description
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii belongs to the Cactaceae family and was first described in 1922. It is found in regions including Brazil, Argentina's Northeast, and Paraguay. The species is notable for its albino mutants, which are typically grafted onto rootstocks of Hylocereus to create the Moon Cactus.
