Gymnadenia nigra, known as the black vanilla orchid, is a perennial orchid species native to Europe, found in mountainous regions such as the Pyrenees, Alps, and central Scandinavia. It is the provincial flower of Jämtland in Sweden. The plant reaches a maximum height of 25 cm and has experienced population decline due to over-harvesting. In Italy, it is classified as an endangered species.

Description

Gymnadenia nigra (L.) Rchb.f. is a member of the Orchidaceae family and is distributed across northern and southern Europe, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Balkans. It was first published in 1856. This species is known for its ecological significance and is part of the natural flora in alpine and subalpine habitats. Due to over-harvesting, its populations have diminished, leading to its endangered status in some regions.
