Gustavia augusta L., a species in the Lecythidaceae family, was first described by Linnaeus in 1775. It is native to the Neotropics, with a wide distribution across Amazonian and surrounding regions, including parts of Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and other countries in northern South America. The genus Gustavia was validated as the nomen conservandum over Japarandiba.

Description

Gustavia augusta is a member of the Lecythidaceae, a family of flowering plants commonly found in tropical regions. The species is documented in several protected areas, including Parque Nacional Natural de Amacayacu and Parque Nacional Natural El Tuparro in Colombia. It is present in various Brazilian biogeographic regions, as well as in Bolivia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad-Tobago, and the Windward Islands. The plant's broad distribution reflects its adaptation to diverse tropical ecosystems. Linnaeus established the genus Gustavia as the accepted name over Japarandiba, as noted in botanical nomenclature discussions.
