Abies cephalonica Loudon
Abies cephalonica, known as Grecian Fir, is a fir native to Greece, particularly the Peloponnesos and Kefallonia, and intergrades with the Bulgarian fir in the Pindus mountains. It is a medium-sized evergreen conifer reaching 25–35 m tall, occasionally up to 40 m, with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter. It grows at elevations of 900–1,700 m in regions with over 1,000 mm annual rainfall.
Description
Abies cephalonica, described by Loudon in 1838, is a member of the Pinaceae family. It is found in the mountainous regions of Greece, including the Peloponnesos and the island of Kefallonia. The species is also reported in several European countries, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, as well as in Albania and Hungary. It is an evergreen conifer that typically reaches heights of 25–35 m, with a trunk diameter of up to 1 m. It thrives in mountainous areas with high rainfall, above 1,000 mm annually, and is adapted to elevations between 900 and 1,700 m.
