Cannabis sativa L., a member of the Cannabaceae family, is an annual herbaceous flowering plant first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. Native to Eastern Asia, it is now widely distributed globally due to its long history of cultivation. The species has been used for industrial fiber, seed oil, food, medicine, and as a recreational and spiritual substance.

Description

Cannabis sativa L. is a species within the genus Cannabis, part of the Cannabaceae family. Linnaeus first published the name in 1753. The species is indigenous to Eastern Asia but has spread worldwide through cultivation. It has been historically used for its fiber, oil, food, and medicinal properties, as well as for recreational and spiritual purposes. Typification of the species has been discussed in botanical literature, with multiple specimens in the LINN collection considered original material. Stearn designated a Clifford collection as the lectotype, though another specimen in LINN was previously selected by Villiers. Images of these specimens have been published by Schultes and Stearn.
