The species was first described in 1753.

Helianthus giganteus is a member of the genus Helianthus and is found in regions including Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, parts of Russia, France, and the eastern United States, including Vermont, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, and Georgia. The plant's scientific name was published in 1753. Historical notes indicate that the type material for the species is not fully established, as the specimen in the LINN herbarium is a later addition and lacks a Species Plantarum number. This species is recognized in botanical literature as a native of North America and parts of Europe.
