It was first described in 1933 as Cryptothallus mirabilis and later reclassified in 2008 under the genus Aneura. This species lacks chlorophyll, resulting in a white appearance, and its plastids do not develop into chloroplasts.
Description
Aneura mirabilis is a member of the Aneuraceae family and is found in Europe, Northern Asia (excluding China), and North America, particularly in SE, NO, and DK. It is a parasitic liverwort that does not perform photosynthesis due to the absence of chlorophyll. The plant's plastids remain undifferentiated, preventing the formation of chloroplasts. It was originally described in 1933 as Cryptothallus mirabilis and later reclassified by Wickett and Goffinet in 2008.
