Geonoma cuneata is a species of palm in the Arecaceae family, native to regions in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela. It is found in protected areas such as PNN Tayrona, Parque Nacional Natural Las Orquídeas, and others. The plant can grow up to 2.5 m tall, with stems that are solitary or clustered, and internodes that are yellowish and smooth. Leaves are undivided or irregularly pinnate, with distinct morphological features including long sheaths and petioles.
Description
Geonoma cuneata is a palm species with a height of 0.3 to 2.5 m, with stems ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 m tall and 0.4 to 3.4 cm in diameter. The plant may be solitary or clustered, with yellowish, smooth internodes. Leaves number between 4 and 17 per stem, with undivided or irregularly pinnate blades. The sheaths can be up to 51.0 cm long, and the petioles up to 113.5 cm long, drying to orange-brown, reddish-brown, green, or yellowish. The rachis is 12.0 to 250.0 cm long and 1.3 to 9.0 mm in diameter. Pinnae are present on each side of the rachis, with distinct angles formed by the basal and apical pinnae. Inflorescences are unbranched, with tubular prophylls and peduncular bracts.
