Description

Gazania rigens (L.) Gaertn. belongs to the genus Gazania in the family Asteraceae. It is known by the common name gazania and is native to the coastal areas of southern Africa. The species has been introduced and naturalized in regions such as the Azores, Portugal, and parts of Europe. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant. The taxonomic history of the species includes discussions on typification, with Roessler's typification accepted despite arguments by Wijnands. The holotype specimen 1027.3 (LINN) is annotated by Linnaeus as Othonna rigens and is considered original material for both that name and Gorteria rigens (L.) L. (1763).
