It is native to the Iberian Peninsula and is one of several species in the Hyacinthoides genus, which also includes the common bluebell and the Italian bluebell.

It was first published in 1944. The plant is commonly known as the Spanish bluebell or wood hyacinth and is one of approximately a dozen species within the Hyacinthoides genus. Other notable species in this genus include the common bluebell, native to northwestern Europe, and the Italian bluebell, found further east in the Mediterranean region.
