It is native to the Americas and has naturalized in regions such as southern Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The species was described by Cavanilles in 1796 based on a collection from 'Regio horto Matritense' and an illustration. A specimen labeled by Cavanilles and Née is considered part of the original material, with a lectotype designation needed for clarification.
Description
Oenothera tetraptera is a flowering plant in the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). It is native to the Americas and has become naturalized in various regions, including southern Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The species was first described by Cavanilles in 1796, based on a 1795 collection from 'Regio horto Matritense' and an illustration. A specimen labeled by both Cavanilles and Née, housed in MA (MA 476026), is considered part of the original material. Garilleti (1993) designated this as type material, but it requires formal designation as a lectotype according to botanical nomenclature rules.
