Osmunda regalis, known as royal fern or flowering fern, is a deciduous fern native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. It typically grows in woodland bogs and along stream banks. The species is sometimes called flowering fern due to the appearance of its fertile fronds. It belongs to the family Osmundaceae and was first described in 1753.

Description

Osmunda regalis is a fern species with a wide distribution, including regions such as Açores, Madeira, Portugal, and various islands. It was described by L. in 1753. The plant is characterized by its fertile fronds, which resemble flowering structures. Taxonomically, it is part of the genus Osmunda and the family Osmundaceae. There have been discussions regarding the lectotype of the species, with a specimen from Smaland considered but deemed ineligible due to being post-1753.
